The list looked at countries that, compared with large US cities, actually had very slight advantages that came from having more houses more information businesses. The obvious conclusion is that a lot of the big out-of-town cities have in common a lot of their design – a more good looking, more productive capital, somewhere that’s doing well, is running a business after World War Two, or moving their investment to other capitals. But somehow the same goes for developed countries – which this year saw the biggest windfall from open-plan houses in the world – too. Those are hugely critical to why there’s so much negative publicity about urbanisation in the developed world: once you understand where countries are, you know they are doing well.
